It provides a superset of features from gpg --card-edit an can be considered a frontend to scdaemon which is a daemon started by gpg-agent to handle smart cards. I'm using a YubiKey as a smart card for GPG on a daily basis and finding out that it's broken like that while trying to do actual work would have been a major headache. Thanks for the heads-up.
